Dreams and the Future
A refugee can be anyone. Doctors, farmers, models, teachers, each with their own hopes and dreams. They are all united by their vulnerability, unable to work or pursue their goals. They are left hoping and waiting for resettlement so they can continue their lives.
“I want to teach”
“I miss my country. If I am safe, I want to go to [my country]. I am alone here…But now I cannot go back home, [it’s] too dangerous. For resettlement, I do not have any interview scheduled. It has now been a year to take me to a safe place…If I resettle; I want to go have a business. But I also want to teach about culture. I am a specialist in economy and physical education in my two certificate degree. That is why I want to teach.”
“A refugee does not have any plans”
“I do not have any plans, but I will say yes to whatever project that country gives me; a refugee does not have any plans. Whatever I can do with my intelligence and courage I will do. In conclusion, I am waiting for the result of the UN, but even if I am a refugee, I will not be completely happy.”
“I want to live like other people”
“My country I love, it is my country, it had my family, but I cannot return. I fear persecution. If the government changes and it is secure I will return…Me, I want to live like other people, recover my life. I lost my family; I do not know where my wife and children are. I want to work and live without persecution. I want to see my family, my children, and my wife. The UN…is my only hope.”
“I want to study”
“First of all I want to study and find a job. I want to earn money because I have three sisters that need dowry. I want to help people that have experienced several problems because I know now, I have experienced.”
“I want to have my parents”
“I want to study and work. First I want to have my parents with me. I love my mother very much. If I get an opportunity, I want to help other refugees because I know the problems they face.”
“I want to save people”
“I completed 3 years in university, undergraduate, which is a 5 year course. I would like to continue studying…Study first and work for [the resettled] country. Try to do something to help refugees and support social organizations and NGOs, including churches. I want to save people….If I get the opportunity and it is safe for me, I will go back, but it is important that it is safe.”
“You cannot do anything here”
“I have Bachelors in philosophy. If I am resettled I would like to learn more. But you can study at another country, you cannot do anything here.”
“It is a little difficult”
“It is a little difficult because the experiences I have had in Thailand have taught me a lot. I want to go the resettlement country and see what I can do there.”
“I miss my country”
“I have a Bachelor’s degree in physics. If I have a chance I would like to have a Master’s degree…First I want to finish my studies, then get a hard working job…I miss [my country] every single minute. I would go back if I have a chance.”
